When February 14th comes around, enamored couples look for new ways to celebrate cheesy love-themed festivities in tandem. Going abroad is always a winner in the romance department, but with trips to the standard getaways of Paris and Rome threatening to break the bank, it’s not always a viable option. Lanzarote on the other hand is proving itself to be great for those wanting to go on cheap holidays, as an added bonus, the weather is balmy throughout the year and the scenery is beautiful. So if you are considering the Canaries for a romantic break this year, here are some of the highlights that will surely stoke the fires of your lover’s heart.
Saturday night at the movies
Enjoy a date night with a difference at Lanzarote’s Cine 6D, a white knuckle cinema trip that will leave you clutching on to your significant other as though your life depended on it. An immersive hybrid of rollercoaster and virtual reality, this is as far away from a romantic-comedy movie as it gets: and it won’t leave you feeling half as queasy.
Take the plunge
No, that’s not a suggestion to pop the question, unless the question is “Can you help me on with my flippers?” Lanzarote has an exquisite underwater landscape for divers to explore together. What could be more heart-melting than an encounter with a pretty sea horse, manta ray or octopus? And underwater, it’s pretty much impossible to have a lover’s tiff. The best diving sites are found in the waters near Puerto del Carmen; just make sure to budget for this, as it’s on the pricier end of the scale of available activities.
Walk on the wild side
If you love wildlife, make time in your schedule for a trip to the Guinate Tropical Park and Penguin Paradise. Wander through lush landscaped gardens and glittering waterfalls and encounter cute critters like meerkats, fennec foxes and parrots. Open from 10am until 5pm daily, it’s great value for money with a flat 14 Euro entry for adults including the recently-opened botanic garden and penguin observatory.
It’s not Paris or Rome, but with its rugged volcanic landscape, beautiful coastline and stunning wildlife, Lanzarote has its own brand of allure for love-struck couples. You might just fall in love with it.
